Liposculpture with Bodyjet

Bodyjet liposculpture is an advanced form of fat removal which I believe is a fundamental advance in liposuction.

Liposuction (or liposculpture) is the removal of fat through small incisions by suction and has undergone a number of changes over the years.

Whatever you might think fat is quite firmly attached to nearly all the locations it occurs in around the body. The earliest techniques used brute force to break up the fat allowing it to be suctioned up a metal tube called a cannula. For some time after this, evolution of the technique centred on making the job easier for the surgeon. Tumescent liposuction involved filling the tisses with fluid to ‘soften up’ the fat and does make it easier to remove at the expense of obliterating contours which adds other difficulties.

Ultrasonic probes shatter the fat but generate heat. Laser liquefaction of the fat (‘smart’ liposuction) relies on the fat being absorbed and dealt with by the liver and therefore has limits to the amount that can be removed.

The Bodyjet gently loosens the fat with a pulsed water jet. This is combined with a dual core cannula that allows the water jet to loosen whilst suction is carried out at the same time.

In 2006 I visited Hartmut Meyer (the pioneer of this technique) in Hamburg twice and learnt to use the device. I have since treated many patients and have found the technique results in less swelling and bruising. For small areas the recovery is rapid and these can be treated under local anaesthetic.
For larger areas, the Bodyjet allows more fat to be removed in a single sitting.
